Ian. Wright.

Re: West Ham top 3 Strikers
To all that care, I put Ian Wright in there cos he was pure class.

Hurst was my first choice cos he did it at club level and International level, plus he won us the World Cup.

Wright for me is the best out and out goal scorers we have had. I know he is considered a Gooner, he played 22 games for us, banged in 9 goals, So I can see why some people think he shouldn’t be on there but he in my opinion was unplayable.

Cottee was deadly, both for us and Everton.

Ashton I think would have been a legend and Andy Carroll always put in a shift when he played and was great in the air but was a sweet striker of the ball too, lived his game….Shame they both didn’t get to play more.

I put Zamora as an honorable mention because I loved watching him play, he scored some lovely goals for us, he played with so much love and passion for the game, it was like watching a kid play almost….

Anyway, sorry If I upset anybody, just my two pennies worth.

Even in my era it's impossible to split Cottee, McAvenie, Hartson, Ashton & Di Canio.

Obviously Abou goes without saying. Saying "apart from Abou" is a waste of everyone's time.

That is fucking brilliant. Cheers for that. Weird to think I was standing there 50 and more years later in the same stand cheering the team on.

I cannot believe that Samassi Abou isn't on here

Our most prolific Striker was Vic Watson with 326 goals in 505 appearances between 1920 and 1935.
Vic also made 5 appearances for England scoring 4 goals.

In any era he was head and shoulders above any other Hammers legend though sadly, being pre war, few remember him.

This is a film with sound of Vic scoring twice Vs Huddersfield in August 1930.

Shot from the old South Bank with sound!

Re: West Ham top 3 Strikers
Didn't Jimmy the tree score something like 10 in his first 10 games or thereabouts? Dunno why but his form didn't last long and was eventually replaced (by Mike Small?).

One memory of him was scoring in a cup match against some minnows and just stood there giving the entire North Bank a hard stare as they'd been giving him shit all night. Was the least intimidating stare I'd ever seen up to that point.

Re: West Ham top 3 Strikers
Good question. Since I’ve been going,

Frankie Mac
Johnny Hartson
PDC

Hard to leave out Tony Cottee though. And the first season I was going we had Paul Goddard and agreed, he was superb.

Re: West Ham top 3 Strikers
you're right about Jimmy Quinn, he had a brilliant partnership with Morley. they both regret in recentish interviews that it didn't last for more seasons

Re: West Ham top 3 Strikers
Pretty depressing reading some of the names of the past 20 years really.

Since my first season ticket in 1990, 10 that come into mind In terms of ability:

Di Canio
Tevez
Ashton
Bellamy
Hartson
Defoe
Kanoute
Antonio
Arnautovic
Harewood / Kitson /Zamora = draw

Top 3 listed probably being my top 3 forwards.

Cottee and McAvennie were past their best when I started going, same with Ian Wright. Strangely one player who I always thought seemed amazing was Jimmy Quinn, he just always scored, though I was only 8 years old, and I seem to remember I always thought Danny Ship was going to be a superstar!

Re: West Ham top 3 Strikers
For me it'll always be Cottee, Frank and one other. Their goalscoring exploits of 85-86 will never be repeated.

Have a day off, of course it isn't 'West Ham strikers that were at their best somewhere else but shit for us' list.
Fucking hell. Davor fucking Suker.

Re: West Ham top 3 Strikers
but if that's the case why is Zamora etc being mentioned

Mr Anon 2:47 Fri Nov 26
Re: West Ham top 3 Strikers
well if that's the case it would be Greaves, Sheringham, and Wright probably!

brick_lane_batty_boy 2:42 Fri Nov 26
Re: West Ham top 3 Strikers
Depends how this question is being viewed - who were 3 best performing strikers for West Ham? Or the best 3 strikers ever to play for West Ham irrespective of the stage of career we had them at ?

If it's the latter - Ian Wright can definitely be considered - I'd also say Davor Suker

Re: West Ham top 3 Strikers
I've seen it alleged that Vic Watson's goal bonus was a crate of beer and 20 fags.

He once scored a double hat-trick. I hope his bonus lasted more than an evening.
